Shameless Self-Promotion

My article on the cultural politics of jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, "The World According to Marsalis: Difference and Sameness in Wynton Marsalis's From the Plantation to the Penitentiary" has just been published in the most recent issue of the Journal of Popular Music Studies. I'm posting here a few links that may be of interest to anyone reading the article.

This is the first (and title) track for the album, "From the Plantation to the Penitentiary." The image on the video is the album cover by artist Jessica Benjamin. It's titled Rapper (Tragedy).

I talk mostly about two other songs from the album in my article. Here's the first, "Supercapitalism."

Here's the second one, and the one that I focus the most on: "Where Y'All At?" (My apologies for the business card ad that forms the image for this--but it's the music that's important here, anyway.)

Most of the images that are used in the album liner notes can be found on Jessica Benjamin's website.

Hey John (not to be confused with "Hey Jude" or "Hijack")...just enjoying a nice Saturday morning and thought I would check out your blog...and then say hello :). I had an interesting conversation recently with a Bloomberg reviewer who trashed RAIN...personally I thought I lanced him thoroughly, although he was of another opinion. I guess that's what reviewers do: have another opinion. I also had an email conversation with a writer from the MPLS Tribune about an excellent article he wrote on a gentleman of 85 years and his wife in a nursing home. Very moving. The article. Not my email. I'm getting an itch to promote some shows this year (it's not like swimmer's itch or any of the other skin-abuse events encountered on a mosquito filled day in North Dakota)...anyway, was thinking it would be fun to get Jerry Lee Lewis for a show at the Fargo. Am going to Women and their Music tonight at the Fargo...always an interesting show. Kris Kitko from Bismarck is very entertaining. Look her up...some awesome social commentary songs...and from Bismarck too. I have puppy visitation this weekend so Bandit and Casper (also known as Scoundrel and Rascal) are here with me. They're pretty darned cute. Hope you don't mind all this personal stuff on your blog...it was just screaming for some comments, so I couldn't resist. PSM
